Spiritual growth can at times feel like a battle yet it is only our ego that complicates the process. We can keep battling the mental dilemmas or we can choose to follow in the steps of some of the greatest teachers of all time and begin to meditate and quiet the mind. Begin to just be alone with God. Who knows why each of us do the things we do or what causes us to stick with some things and to abandon others. Why we may delve in with passion one minute and completely lose interest the next? It may be a matter of sticking with faith rather than things. Thinking about sticking with one thing, or not . . .  I have done so many things in my life but with how many have I stayed? And does it matter if I didn’t? Lots of my friends and acquaintances are out over the holidays attending Broadway shows, holiday gatherings, shopping and dining at high-end places, taking mountain ski trips or Christmas cruises because they stuck something out (you know, forty years of nine-to-five), while I am here recycling last year’s Christmas cards into name tags, trying to figure out how to make a wreath from four pine cones and a piece of discarded frosted wedding decor because I chose instead to live on simple faith. Yet I have accomplished much; some in little ways and some in big ways.  An

Recently I realized that the harm anyone has mostly ever done to me has been to my ego. Most of the people or events that I have perceived as painful or upsetting or hurtful were to my ego. No real harm has been done and seeing that makes it easier to let go, especially where relationships are concerned. Relationships were the most of it though there were also incidents like I didn’t get a job I wanted or I thought I wasn’t going to get to fulfill a dream, or children teasing me as a child, disappointments; still it was all only affecting my ego. The only real pain I think that there has been that was not a result of my ego’s perception, was the pain and loss of others like illness and death, those are true pains upon the heart. But the other ninety percent were only hurts to the ego and as I said, I realized no real harm has been done. We are moving into the holiday season and it is more important than ever that you give yourself some time each day to relax, refresh, re-charge to help you look and feel and be your very best with your holiday sparkle shining. Even if it is only a few minutes, those few precious minutes can really give you a boost. Here are a few suggestions when you're looking for a few quiet rejuvenating moments: A quick shower can easily turn into an aromatherapy session by adding a luxurious bar of handmade soap. Try peppermint for a refreshing lift. Our great-grandparents soaked their feet and this is an easy fix after a hectic day. Add some Epson salts and an essential oil to your foot bath or try my peppermint and eucalyptus bath salts . Mid-day spritzer is always nice. Take a hide-a-away and spend ten minutes with your favorite book or inspirational piece . Do a deep relaxation in the pose of the corpse , savasana. Ten minutes. Every now and then do you get that feeling of an inkling of your soul giving you the feeling that it’s OK to be you? You feel the rising excitement of freeing yourself, of being all and more than you ever dreamed. This is soul-guidance from its deepest level. The next time you have this feeling, go with it, see where it leads you, and see who you will become when you free your soul to “be.” Fight off the fear, stick your toe in the water, and then follow the flow. We are all unique and we were put here to be who we were meant to be. You have gifts to share with the world. You are the Divine expression of love and creativity but it is up to you to follow the course. Listen for that soul-call, it may be a whisper, a simple “pssssst,” with the gentlest nudge to be yourself, follow your heart and live your dreams. Advent is a good time to develop new spiritual practices and to deepen your faith Advent begins tomorrow, December 3.  Advent is a season observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming." It includes a countdown to Christmas especially encompassing the first four Sunday before Christmas, to allow quiet contemplation time for the coming of Christ's birthday and the second coming of Christ (our Christ consciousness within). Practices associated with Advent include keeping an Advent calendar, lighting an Advent wreath, praying an Advent daily devotional, lighting a Christingle, as well as other ways of preparing for Christmas, such as setting up Christmas decorations, a custom that is sometimes done liturgically, through a hanging of the greens ceremony.
