Finding God in the Ordinary

Currently, I am reading Margaret Guenther’s, “The Practice of Prayer,” but it is so much more. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking spiritual guidance and growth, as well as a big dose of clarity.

Today I read some more of Margaret Guenther and it really seems like every time I read a further chapter, it is an answer to the questions I am having. This was one on finding the Spirit (God) in the ordinary. Home life, family, drudgery; not feeling stuck but knowing rather that it is where you are called. She has such a way of putting the profound into simplicity.

Also she talked on professions, whether you are an artist or a bus driver, finding the Spirit (God) within it. I suspected it is not what I do but my motives and how I do it and whether I am good in all things I do, even if it’s just the dishes. She makes the  comparison to the monk’s cell which I have already made numerous times on my own (I talk about this in the "New Age of Christ") to our daily lives such as the kitchen or the office or wherever, that we find and face ourselves in these ordinary places.

Reading Guenther, I feel much better about my decisions as well as what I am currently doing and why, and understand that we can each indeed find God in the everyday nook and cranny.

MARGARET GUENTHER (1930 - 2016), an Episcopal priest, was the director of the Center for Christian Spirituality of the General Theological Seminary in New York City. She was the author of “Holy Listening: The Art of Spiritual Direction,” and many other books.

Words Across Time

Words linger. Whether it is audible, something spoken to us or something we read, words linger in our minds and stick like glue. Words are one of the few things that set us apart from all the other animals and living things, we can speak. Is it any wonder that the memory of a mother’s soft coo can so strongly calm and send us to the kitchen for a cup of coco or that the memory of a scolding can set us trembling? Words are positive, negative or neutral; neutral words have little effect but words of a positive or negative nature can lift up and inspire or tear down and destroy. In a sense, they are our strongest power and thus the power of words move with us across time. St. Catherine Christine de Pisan Whether I am reading the Bible or an ancient manuscript crafted out a thousand or more years ago by isolated monks on some remote island or a contemporary twentieth century author who has now passed, it never ceases to amaze me that I get to hear their thoughts acr...
