Last night I watched The
Letters about Mother Teresa and it was an amazing movie. I am glad to have
learned so much more about her. What an incredible person and story. She won
the Nobel Peace prize in 1979 and was canonized in 2003.
Watch the movie trailer below:
The movie is based on a series of letters that she wrote to
her spiritual director over six decades. It seemed to have mixed reviews online
due mostly to the arrangement and narration but do not let those fool you, this
is an excellent, moving and heartfelt movie that every single person should
have to watch. In seeing not only so much that she endured but that of those
for whom she cared, it is a strong reminder that most of us have little over
which to complain. Many of us living in the comforts of Western society indeed
forget (or even ignore) from day-to-day how truly we have been blessed and we
will let even the tiniest inconvenience upset our day yet we do not know true
hardship in most of our lives.
There were points in the movie where I felt I could barely
breathe and the lump in my throat so large, it was difficult to swallow. One
such moment was a at the point where she was so tired from walking back and
forth to the slums, spending all day there and trying to help so many and she says, “Today,
I learned a good lesson. The poverty of the poor must be so hard for them.
While looking for a home I walked and walked till my arms and legs ached. I
thought how much they must ache in body and soul, looking for a home, food and
health.” This touched me so as I sit complaining of my own tiny trials
and obstacles, fully realizing that I, nor most in the western world, have
anything to complain about. Appreciation, gratitude and thankfulness for the
blessings I and so many have been given, poured forth in tears of painful self-reproach.
Regardless of religious or spiritual belief, Mother Teresa
is probably one of the most influential persons of modern time, a role model
worthy of at least our recognition but more certainly of our efforts to learn, to
grow, to share the Spirit and to do all that we may in the help of others,
unconditionally, through pure self-sacrificing love.
Follow the light of your heart!
Many blessings.
