Depression can signal many things including the need to
overcome, to get up and fight, to defeat the darkness. I guess there is a
question here that we must first answer and that is, do we believe that the
power of the Spirit within can overcome depression, especially if it is due to
a chemical imbalance in the body? Personally I believe it can; I know it can
because I have the resume’ to prove it. One thing for sure is that it signals
that we are out of spiritual alignment, whatever the reason. So it is important
to find where and why we went off in the other direction and get back on track.
Some things take effort. Choosing and staying in joy takes effort, fighting the
darkness takes effort, staying in spiritual alignment takes effort, otherwise
we veer off and the next thing we know, we have lost the connection, depression
has snuck in and taken control.
Depression signals that it may be time for a pause. There is
nothing wrong with taking a pause, stepping back, contemplating, clearing the
mind, stopping the constant pushing to get ahead. Time out is good for the
body, mind and soul.
Depression can also signal that the ego has once again taken
the reigns. If the depression or low feelings stem from anything like feelings
toward personal achievement, lack, self-confidence, frustration in trying to
make things work, then it is a signal to get out of the “me” mentality and put
the thoughts toward something else: God, helping others.
Low feelings can also signal that we are not using our gifts
appropriately. Try taking the feelings and turning them around into something
that can help others. Depression certainly blocks all creativity and
inspiration which then gets us into a loop. Stop it by finding a way to turn
the feelings to the positive to help others. Once we do, the light begins to
eek out and the next thing we know, we are back in the groove and all is well
again.
Psalm 43:5 asks, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why
art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is
the health of my countenance, and my God.” It also tells us that by going from
the “me” mentality to one of praise (to the God mentality) that we will be
lifted because as it says, God is the health of our countenance. Countenance
means what we are expressing through what we are feeling. This Psalm tells us
that God is the “health” of that which means that indeed depression can be
controlled and overcome by simply turning to praise, by turning our thoughts to
God, to the Spirit. It tells us that God is the healer of our mood.
So regardless of the cause, the remedy is simple: get out of
me-mode and into God-mode. Pause. Give thanks, praise and gratitude. Then turn
that depression around and channel it into love for the world.
Many blessings.
