Medieval Women of Faith: Saints, Mystics and Holy Women

Fresco of Saint Clare and sisters of her order, church of San Damiano, Assisi

There have always been those who throughout time have isolated themselves in pursuit of a devotional life and women were certainly among them. Much of my fascination with women of faith lies within the Medieval period with the first serious spiritual writings and directives that begin to emerge from groups and women like the Beguines, the Poor Clares, Hildegard, Hadewjich, St. Catherine, and so many others. Feminine Christian mystics, visionaries, saints, and leaders of their time, who laid a foundation that would continue to uphold and guide women of faith into the present-day.

They were the shining example of the true light of the spirit in a dark and dangerous time. They were pace-setters, they were sometimes rule-breakers; they had to forge a path where previously there was none. They had the courage to break off from society, to stand for those who could not, to reach out and give when there was little available, and in many cases to support themselves in what really was a male-dominated world.

Speaking out with the voice of God, these women remained pure and holy to their vows and to a life of devotion. Their inspiration lives on throughout the centuries and offers us a wealth of knowledge, light and understanding which if we understand, may then be applied to our own lives.

If you are interested in studying these amazing women, a few suggestions to begin with are:

St. Clare of Assisi
St. Catherine
Hildegard von Bingen Hatewijch
Matilde
Agnes of Prague
St. Teresa of Avila
Christine de Pizan

Much of their works and writing are available online or at a library near you.

Enlightenment and Awakening Easier Than We Think

After decades of seeking enlightenment and awakening, I now understand that these things; these ideas, these concepts, have been so over complicated and made to seem as if they are a state unattainable to most. It is made to seem that that they are only to be achieved by the great masters. Though nothing is black and white, on the one hand, there may be degrees; but on the other hand can you be only partially awake? Partially enlightened? Either you are or you are not. As long as I was seeking to be, I was not, for seeking kept me so busy that I could not settle within myself long enough to wake up. And both terms are as simple as that: waking up, allowing the light of God to illuminate our spiritual sight. There are no fireworks, it is not some un-achievable level (like some religions and philosophies would have us believe). It is a simple matter of waking up. All that is required is to allow God to move into your “house” and let the light shine. This begins with asking Him

Words Across Time

Words linger. Whether it is audible, something spoken to us or something we read, words linger in our minds and stick like glue. Words are one of the few things that set us apart from all the other animals and living things, we can speak. Is it any wonder that the memory of a mother’s soft coo can so strongly calm and send us to the kitchen for a cup of coco or that the memory of a scolding can set us trembling? Words are positive, negative or neutral; neutral words have little effect but words of a positive or negative nature can lift up and inspire or tear down and destroy. In a sense, they are our strongest power and thus the power of words move with us across time. St. Catherine Christine de Pisan Whether I am reading the Bible or an ancient manuscript crafted out a thousand or more years ago by isolated monks on some remote island or a contemporary twentieth century author who has now passed, it never ceases to amaze me that I get to hear their thoughts acr
